Secondary Food Technology Teacher – Part time, permanent

We require an enthusiastic Food Technology and Hospitality teacher to run our food technology department, an integral part of our programme covering years 8-13. Starting term 1, 2023, this is a permanent position, at least 0.57 FTTE. If you are prepared to also teach some junior science, this could be a full time position.

We have developed a culture of excellence in our food technology and hospitality programmes which are popular at NCEA level in our area school. We are accredited for a wide range of practical Level 3 hospitality standards due to running our programme in a fully certified commercial kitchen. Our food technology department is very well resourced using state-of-the art commercial equipment, prototyping real food outcomes for real people. Our existing programme and assessments are ready to go as-is, or can be tailored to meet the expertise of our incoming teacher.

We are currently running 4 food technology classes: year 8 (half-year), year 9 (half-year), year 10 (half-year) and combined year 11-13 class (full year). Further to this we have a combined year 11-13 hospitality class (full year). This is a well-resourced programme with a very realistic and workable budget for a hands-on course focussed on creating in the kitchen. Junior students have 2 x 90 minute cooking slots per week, senior students have 1 x 120 minute cooking per week to enable more elaborate projects to be completed and slot and 1 x 90 min theory slot.

The right mindset, a can-do attitude and an appreciation of nutrition are more important than experience in the specific standards. Industry experience or know-how is highly valued. We are currently running our food technology classes in an off-site commercial kitchen, while we build our own commercial kitchen onsite. Fantastic opportunity to work in a supportive and quality environment.

A willingness and ability to support and uphold the special character of the school, and a willingness and ability to take part in religious instruction appropriate to the special character of the school, shall be a condition of appointment.
