Cornerstone Wins Christian School Sports Exchange Shield

Sports Prefect Talaiasi holds the Exchange Shield.

With a strong sports team lead by Sports Prefect Talaiasi Muli, Cornerstone were keen to avenge their narrow loss in the 2021 Christian Schools Sports Exchange.

Hosted by Longburn Adventist College (LAC), Cornerstone, and Hastings Christian School (HCS) competed in eight different sports over two days.

  • Day One started well for Cornerstone, with our makeshift Senior Girls Football team, and Senior Boys Football teams both getting a win before the rain came. We couldn’t quite replicate those same results in girls nor boys futsal.
  • Mr Jay’s coaching in Cornerstone Volleyball was present, with Cornerstone’s boys and girls teams confidently winning their games against both LAC and HCS. Our girls team featuring a number of representative players, demonstrated good sportsmanship and respect in the way they treated the opposition.

  • Netball was a close affair with a few of Cornerstone’s senior players unavailable. Hastings – the champion school for the last three years, once again beat us in Netball.
  • Our Senior Boys Basketball had a tough game against Hastings Christian School, but were unable to avenge 2021’s loss, with HCS getting another victory.
  • One of the highlights of day one was the a combined dinner, and worship service at LAC. Pastor Kofi preached a good message about the opportunities to worship God through sport.
  • Dodgeball was challenging for Cornerstone teams, with Hastings players again dominating this code.
  • The final event of day one was Ultimate Frisbee. Cornerstone students quickly worked out how to maximise fitness and substitutions to  win this event. Perhaps a reflection of the atmosphere that all schools took to the exchange, the event was fun, people would help their opposition, and a lot of laughs were had among players and crowd. Somehow the Cornerstone team managed to win this event, giving them seven wins over Hastings’ six at the end of the first day.
  • On day two, just the Basketball games were left to play before HCS had to board their buses. Hosts LAC drew the short straw and had to play two games back to back. HCS won the first game against LAC to tie the whole competition. The pressure was then on the CCS Senior Boys Basketball team to beat a tiring LAC. Thanks to a flurry of 3-pointers from Matthew, we did just that to win the final game and overall tournament.

“Our students were great ambassadors for the school” reported Mr McDonald – teacher in charge of sport. “It was awesome to come together under the umbrella of Jesus as Christians” he explained.

Thanks to Mr McDonald, and to Mrs Korte from LAC for organising the event, and congratulations to all our athletes for winning the shield.
