Fish, Fire Engines, and Free Stuff at Careers Fair

There were over 60 exhibitors, 8 fish, 2 police dogs, and around 300 students from 2 schools at the second annual Cornerstone Careers Fair. Students sought to answer three questions for their chosen careers: 1) What is it like, 2) What qualifications do you need, and 3) How much does it pay.

The Military, Police and Fire Service stands were popular. Students raced to put on fire protective equipment, played with handcuffs, and challenged soldiers to press up competitions. The exciting police dog demonstration was interrupted by an even more exciting actual Armed Offender Squad call out. Students got to see the sirens on after all.

Tertiary providers like Massey University, Ucol, Endeavour Automotive and Emmaus Bible College were well represented. Students had the opportunity to experience birthing a calf, putting out a fire, driving a big rig, and interpreting an X-ray.

Deputy Head Girl, Kate McDonald enjoyed talking to Innes Dean Lawyers. It was a career she hadn’t considered, and she also happened to win a $20 Glassons voucher from them.

Careers Advisor, Carl McIntyre, enjoyed seeing students come away with new ideas about careers they could pursue. He was quick to thank all the exhibitors for giving up their time and sharing their trade. He was also appreciative of fellow staff for making the event work.
